Anybody want to build me a Movable Type plug-in that automatically closes comments on an entry after a set time period and retroactively closes comments on old posts? There’s beer in it for ya!

I could give you a bit of javascript that would disable the form after a set period of time. But that would mean they’d just need to disable javascript, if they were really intent on leaving a comment.

Greg, I’m interested to know why you want to close threads off after a certain date. Is it just specific threads, or all of them?

    Mark–
Oy, I should have mentioned that my MT blog isn’t set up with a MySQL backend, but the default Berkeley DB backend.
There are one or two scripts, including the one you pointed out, that will close comments on MySQL-powered MT weblogs, but I haven’t found one that does it for Berkeley DB powered MT weblogs. :-/
    Thanks for the suggestion, though!

    Scott–
Primarily, I’d like a bit more control over opening and closing comments on entries “in bulk” because I’ve begun to see increase in spammy or just plain insane comments. I don’t feel a weblog entry needs to be kept open to comments when the likelihood is no one will comment except for that one socially-challenged guy living in his mom’s basement who is compelled to append obscenity-laden non sequitur comments to 18-month old weblog entries. Most old entries go uncommented upon, but it happens just frequently enough to irk me.
