Grand Theft Education

Evan Kirchhoff responds to the Chronicle article, "Can Grand Theft Auto Inspire Professors?"

For all you ed bloggers out there, I highly recommend Ev's blog, 101-280. He's not always writing about education, but he's a remarkably clear-headed thinker. Plus, I once had dinner with him at a Ukranian diner.* I don't know why that's relevant. I just like people to know I frequent Ukranian diners.

Interestingly, Evan was also someone I met on the listserv mentioned in the last post. It must be Future Culture week here on 10RW.

*For the record, it was in Manhattan, not Ukraine.

Heh, FC week on 10RW? Funny, I was just looking at Evan's weblog, and I thought of yours. So I stopped by, for maybe the fourth time in my life... FC week indeed!

FC Week! Yay!

All this stuff has made me realize how much of a fixture FC has been in my life. Especially in contrast to everything else.

And that Ukrainian diner was Veselka, I presume? 2nd Avenue and 9th Street?

Bingo on the diner, Anthony! Do you know Veselka's or was that something else posted to the list at the time?

I heartily recommend the meatballs. Get the beet salad on the side.

I'm familiar with Veselka and it's right around the corner from where Evan was living when he was here. Simple reasoning. ;) It's one of my "fallback" places to eat when I'm in the area.

Hi, Mike! It is funny how many FC people I'm still in semi-regular contact with even after all this time offlist: JP, Taylor, Darren; I was just talking to Tom B., etc.

Anthony -- I forget if I mentioned this, but speaking of diners, our Brooklyn friends took us to Superfine in DUMBO, since they wanted to show off this hip place they'd discovered via the New Yorker review or whatever. I was able to utterly pull rank on them and say, "oh, yeah, we were here 3 YEARS AGO when it was just a cult hamburger stand".

Hey, it's "Ukrainian", not "Ukranian".

I have nothing else to add except to comment on the pity I feel for those of you who have to go to a restaurant to get Ukrainian food.
